Derek Gilliland oversees the firm’s intellectual property litigation, which primarily operates out of the firm's Dallas office. Mr. Gilliland has been an instrumental member of the trial teams for the firm to biggest intellectual property verdicts.
In 2010, he was a key member of the trial team for DataTreasury in its trial against US Bank, which resulted in a $27,000,000 that was enhanced to $54,000,000 for willfulness.
In 2013, Mr. Gilliland was the lead trial lawyer for the team that obtained a $95,795,507 verdict for Syntrix against Illumina in federal court in Tacoma, Washington. This verdict is the largest patent infringement verdict in the State of Washington. Mr. Gilliland and the Nix, Patterson & Roach team were assisted at trial by lawyers with Bracewell & Giuliani.
Mr. Gilliland has carried his skills beyond the trial courts by successfully arguing before the Texas Supreme Court, and by being a frequent seminar speaker for the Texas State Bar, AIPLA, and other professional organiziations.
